Why a vacation rental beats a hotel when you’re traveling with a dog
You probably already know the frustrations. Hotels that call themselves pet-friendly usually mean “we’ll let you in if your dog is under twenty-five pounds and doesn’t make a sound.” You end up cramped in one room with a dog who’s confused about why they can’t run around, and you can’t really leave to grab dinner because the housekeeper might walk in.
A vacation rental is a different experience entirely. Your dog gets a yard. A living room to stretch out in. Somewhere quiet to nap while you’re at the pool or out for the afternoon. You get a full kitchen to keep their food and routine on schedule, and you both get the kind of privacy that just doesn’t exist in a hotel room. A few honest notes about traveling with your dog in the desert
The Coachella Valley is one of the most rewarding places in California to bring a dog, but the climate is something you really need to plan around. A quick heads up before you book.
From late May through September, midday pavement temperatures regularly climb past 140°F. That can burn paw pads in under a minute on direct asphalt. The rule local owners use is simple: if you can’t comfortably hold the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds, your dog shouldn’t be walking on it either.
Plan walks for before 8 a.m. and after sunset when it’s warm out. Keep fresh water at every spot your dog spends time, including outside on the pool deck. Never leave a dog in a parked car between April and October, even for a few minutes. If your dog isn’t used to hot ground, throw a pair of booties in your bag.
It’s also worth saving the nearest 24-hour vet in your phone before you arrive. VCA Desert Animal Hospital on East Palm Canyon Drive is the one most locals use for after-hours emergencies.
Things to do with your dog in Palm Springs and Indio
You’ll be surprised how dog-welcoming this valley is once you start exploring. A few favorites we recommend most often:
- Indian Canyons. A rare national-monument-quality landscape where leashed dogs are allowed on most trails. Get there early, especially in the warmer months.
- Sunrise Park Dog Park in central Palm Springs has separate areas for small and large dogs, with shaded benches around the perimeter. Easy stop for a midday break.
- Downtown Palm Springs. One of the most pet-welcoming main streets in California. Most of the restaurants and shops with outdoor seating will happily seat you and your dog on the patio.
- Coachella Valley Preserve. Shaded boardwalks through working palm oases. One of the few places that stays comfortable even in summer, as long as you go early.
- Lake Cahuilla Recreation Area near La Quinta has off-leash trails and shoreline access. If your dog likes water, this is the spot.

Coming for a festival weekend? Here’s what to plan for.
Bringing the dog for festival weekends is doable, but you have to plan around the festival, not for it. Dogs aren’t allowed inside the polo grounds, so someone in your group will need to stay back at the rental during festival hours.
The good news is that most of our Indio properties above are sized for groups exactly because festival travel is rarely a solo trip. You’ll comfortably have enough people that one person can hang back with the dog for a few hours while the rest of the group heads in, then rotate the next day. A fenced yard, which most of these homes have, also gives your dog space to decompress outdoors during the parts of the day when festival noise carries.

Questions guests ask us most often
Can dogs go in the pool?
That’s really your call. Just keep in mind that dog hair, claws, and oils can wear down pool filtration over time. If your dog swims, give them a quick rinse before they head back into the house.
How many dogs can I bring?
Most of our properties comfortably accommodate two dogs. If you’re traveling with more, or with a particularly large breed, just message us before booking and we’ll let you know what works at the home you have in mind.
Are there weight or breed restrictions?
A handful of properties have restrictions for insurance reasons, and when they do, they’re listed on the individual property page. If you don’t see anything listed, you’re good.
What about cats?

VCA Desert Animal Hospital on East Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs is the local go-to for after-hours emergencies. Our concierge will send you the current address and phone number once your booking is confirmed.

We don’t run boarding ourselves, but we work with trusted local sitters and walkers if you need someone for a few hours during dinner or a festival night. Just ask when you check in.
